Lotte Arai Mountain Resort – Japan’s Powder Paradise
Nestled in the mountains of Myoko, Niigata Prefecture, Arai Mountain Resort is one of Japan’s most underrated ski destinations and a dream for skiers and snowboarders seeking deep powder and uncrowded slopes. Advanced riders appreciate the resort’s challenging landscape, while beginners and intermediates can enjoy beautifully groomed runs that weave through scenic forests.

Fast gondolas and high-speed chairlifts quickly transport visitors across the mountain, keeping lift queues to a minimum, in fact my family and I did not experience any que longer than 2-3m in length!. The base area, developed to international standards, features spacious lodges, quality restaurants, cafés and comfortable accommodation, providing a relaxed alpine atmosphere without the crowds commonly found at Japan’s larger resorts. I am a major fan of Rusutsu ski resort in Hokkaido, but Arai ranks equal to Rusutsu and in some ways better with a more compact feel, yet bountiful runs.
Beyond skiing, Arai offers spectacular views across the mountains towards the Sea of Japan. After a day on the slopes, visitors can unwind in nearby natural hot springs (onsen), savour fresh Niigata seafood and regional cuisine, or explore the historic Myoko region. Convenient access via the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo also makes Arai surprisingly easy to reach.
