Crowds in the relative short Australian snow season are an unfortunate consequence of the mega-popularity of snow sports and the fact that Australia has a total of only 250km of ski runs in the whole country. To put that into perspective the United States has over 13,000km of ski runs, Canada has around 4,500km, Japan upward of 3,000km and New Zealand over 400km.
So which fields in Australia offer the most ski km’s to spread the crowd out a little?

Perisher is the clear winner for length, but I definitely find Thredbo more challenging. The kids and wife love Perisher though. I haven’t skied in Victoria, so won’t comment until next season, some Victorian friends rave about Buller and Falls Creek. I guess we all mostly drive to the fields, so your own state resorts are the obvious choice. Perisher though is the clear winner in the km race, and I must say it tops for family needs with its many gentle rollers and combined ski options including Blue Cow.
